Chasmanthium latifolium
Northern Sea Oats
Chasmanthium latifolium creates clumps of gorgeous green foliage that produce elegant clusters of large, flat, oat-like seedheads that dangle from the plant. The seedheads emerge as green and then transition to a beautiful bronze-purple color later in the summer. The seedheads, when cut and dried, look great in dried flower arrangements and are also a popular food source for birds. It is known to spread somewhat aggressively by rhizomes, so it is better when used in mass plantings and in meadow/prairie-style plantings where it can freely naturalize. It would also do well along streambanks and pond edges.
