Annual
Nephrolepsis exaltata 'Bostoniensis'
Boston Fern
This classic fern has soft green fronds that unfurl from the center of the plant and trail down. When put in a hanging basket, its fronds can grow quite long for a very dramatic and pleasing tropical effect. It can also be a component in mixed containers in the shade, or used in the landscape in shadier beds and borders or woodland edges. It does need partial to full shade in order to keep its fronds from burning and requires moist, well drained soil to keep its roots from rotting. However, under the right conditions it is a vigorous grower and may even produce small fern-lets from the bottom of any container it is planted in!
