Asclepias incarnata
Swamp Milkweed
A favorite among native-plant lovers, Swamp Milkweed is a plant that deserves a place in any garden! Its green willow-like leaves growing all along its sturdy stems give it a graceful appearance and its globes of sweet-smelling pink blooms that emerge in summer are loved by hummingbirds, butterflies and all small pollinators. It is also a host plant for the beloved Monarch butterfly. It forms upright clumps and while it will naturalize by seed where it is happy, it will not spread aggressively via rhizomes like the most common Milkweed, Asclepias syriaca. This makes it perfect for use perennial beds and borders, in moist areas along the waters edge, low spots that have trouble draining, rain gardens, and of course pollinator gardens.
