Asclepias tuberosa
Butterfly Weed
Plant Type: Native
This variety of Asclepias forms a small clump of stems covered in green willow-like leaves and produces gorgeous clusters of bright orange blooms that are loved by hummingbirds, butterflies and pollinators. It is more tolerant of dry and rocky soils and does not like to have wet feet, so well-drained soils are a must. It can take a little longer to become established in the landscape compared to other Asclepias, but its orange blooms is well worth the wait! It can naturalize freely via seed wherever it is happy. It is a great for use in perennial beds and borders, meadow plantings, pollinator gardens, and makes a stunning impact when planted in drifts and groups.
