This native has tall spires of blue pea-like flowers that are held high above its mound of blue-green foliage. The flowers are adored by butterflies and pollinators and also work well as cut flowers for arrangements. The large black seed pods are also equally attractive when dried! It does best in full sun in order to produce the most flowers, although it can tolerate partial shade. It is a very hardy plant once established, and can tolerate drought, clay soil, dry soil, and rocky soils. This makes ideal for use in tougher areas of the landscape and for naturalizing. It also works well in perennial beds and borders, cottage gardens, and meadow/prairie-style plantings.
