A crisp looking multi-stem shade tree with lustrous green leaves and most distinctively, exfoliating papery bark in colors of salmon, cinnamon-brown, reddish-brown and cream to white. Quite attractive in summer and especially in winter with the texture and character of the bark. Fall color yellow. A distant background of evergreen creates a wonderful winter effect. Grows naturally on stream banks and swampy area and will tolerate short periods of dry soil. Prefers acid soil.
