Myrica pensylvanica
Bayberry
Plant Type: Native
An aromatic densely rounded semi-evergreen shrub most noted for the gray waxy fruit on female plants. The fruit is used in candle and soap making, and all parts of the plant are fragrant when crushed. Female plants need a male pollinator for berry production, and only males produce flowers which are yellow-green. Bayberry grows naturally at the seashore and proves extremely tolerant of poor sandy soil and salt conditions. Also adaptable to heavy clay conditions.
